In 2004, the HP Community suffered a great loss when longtime HP engineer and OpenVMS expert and advocate, John Wisniewski, passed away. John’s fervent passion about technology, the IT community, the HP customer, and Encompass are greatly missed. To honor his life and work, Encompass developed the John Wisniewski Memorial Scholarship. MEET SPENCER SLEEPER - THE 2005 JOHN WISNIEWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT!

My name is Spencer Sleeper, and I currently attend Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where I was born and raised. I am pursuing a dual concentration in Management Information Systems and Finance/Insurance, and I also serve as Vice-President of the MIS Club at Northeastern.

After taking an introductory course in Management Information Systems, I realized that managing information technology is what I would truly enjoy doing. When I learned about the major roles that computers and information systems play in maintaining business organizations, it opened up a door to a new and exciting world for me. Since then, I have taken other courses in Information Systems, which I have also enjoyed immensely.

I wish to take every opportunity available to me to further my studies of Information Technology. I want to learn more about Information Systems in a business setting from a managerial perspective, as well as how to design and develop these systems. I’d also like to pursue my interests in business programming, data/knowledge management, and designing web applications. Since it is essential that IT professionals fully comprehend the fundamentals of not only technology, but also the structure of business, it is my sincere hope that my study of Information Technology will be intellectually stimulating yet ultimately satisfying, and that I will be successful in attaining this goal.

I would now like to take a brief moment to say “THANK YOU!” to everyone at Encompass and HP for establishing this scholarship fund to honor the memory of Mr. John Wisniewski. I am very grateful to have been chosen to receive this scholarship, which will assist me in furthering my education.
